Connecting Worlds

Delivering autism training courses and 'My story' educational and motivational sessions.

Hi, I am Deborah Bain, owner of Connecting Worlds autism training. I am mum to a young man with severe autism and wife to an older (but still young!), man with high functioning autism. Both are very different individuals. I began my career in schools, working with individuals and small groups of children with special educational needs. When my son was born we knew he was 'different'. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of two years. To help him grow and develop fully I threw myself into learning as much about the disability as possible. The more I learnt, the more I wanted to learn. My career path felt preordained. I went on to gain my degree with honors whilst working with individuals with autism and other disabilities/special needs. I am also a post 16 years qualified teacher and now have over 15 years of specialist teaching experience as an Autism Trainer. For over 20 years I have been privileged to have worked with hundreds of people with autism, their families, and professionals.

As we can see from all the media coverage, the numbers of children, young people and adults accessing mainstream settings, schools and placements have risen dramatically over recent years; as have numbers of people receiving care in their own homes and residential settings. Unfortunately, training has not kept pace with these rising numbers.

To redress the balance in a small way, in 2018 I set up Connecting Worlds autism training delivering face to face autism, Positive Behaviour Support and sensory difficulties training. Until recently I divided my time between working for Redcar and Cleveland Local Authority as part of a specialist disabilities team and running Connecting Worlds autism training. As demand for training grew I finally took that 'leap of faith' and resigned my post with the LA to concentrate fully on my business. I am enjoying every minute of being able to support so many more individuals with autism, their families and the professionals working with them right across the country. I have been fortunate to have worked with some amazing new people and feedback has been extremely positive.

Most recently I delivered training packages into The Priory Care Group (The Whitby Scheme),  Caremark (East Riding) and Camphill Village Trust at Botton Village, Danby. Through living and working across so many diverse environments and with so many individuals across the autism spectrum, I have gained a unique insight and empathy with those affected by the disorder.

I believe passionately that with greater understanding we can raise the prospects of children, young people and adults with autism; helping them to achieve the best outcomes and to live happier, more fulfilling lives.
